For the Horde!

A quick guide to picking your first Horde character: who each race is, what each class plays like, and which combinations are possible.

Start here

When you make a character you pick two things: a race (how you look, where you start, a few small bonuses) and a class (how you fight — this is the one that really matters). The easiest way to choose: pick the class that sounds fun, then the race you like the look of that can play it.
What do "tank", "healer" and "damage" mean? (only matters later, in groups)
  • Tank — stands in front and keeps the monsters hitting them.
  • Healer — keeps everyone alive.
  • Damage — kills the monsters.
Every class can quest alone just fine. Roles only come up when you team up with others for dungeons.

The races

Racial bonuses are small — pick the race whose look and story you'll enjoy. Tap a class under the picture to see how it looks, and tap the picture to make it bigger.

The classes

Each class has three ways to play it (called specs) that you can pick as you level. Difficulty is for someone new to the game.

Beginner tips

Easiest to start

Hunter and Warlock have a pet that fights for you, which makes questing alone much more forgiving.

Can't decide?

Druid can be a bear, a cat, a caster or a healer — you can try a bit of everything on one character.

Easy to find groups

Healers are always wanted. A Shaman, Priest, Paladin or Druid will rarely wait long for a group.

Change your mind later

At level 40 you can buy a second set of talents (10 gold) and swap between them, e.g. damage for questing and healing for groups.

Starting together

Orcs and Trolls start in the same place (Durotar). Tauren start in Mulgore and Undead in Tirisfal Glades. Pick Orc + Troll, or the same race, to start side by side.
